Security & governance cost
Security services are priced by activity, so governance spend scales with everything else you do.
AWS Config charges per configuration item recorded. GuardDuty prices by events and data volume analyzed. CloudTrail's first management trail is free, and the second one is not. These services earn their cost many times over when they are configured with intent. Configured by default across a large organization, they can quietly become a top-ten line item.
The common patterns: Config recording every resource type in every region including ones with no workloads, duplicate CloudTrail trails shipping the same events twice, and multi-region guardrails applied uniformly where a scoped rollout would satisfy the same control. The compliance requirement is real; the spend shape is negotiable.
