Compute

Compute is usually the largest line on the bill, and the one with the most levers to pull.

EC2's catalog spans hundreds of instance types across generations, families, and processor architectures, plus the serverless options that price by the millisecond. That breadth is a strength: nearly every workload has a right-sized, right-priced home. Finding it is the work.

Most compute waste is structural rather than careless. An instance family chosen three years ago that a newer generation now beats on both price and performance. Development environments that run nights and weekends. Capacity provisioned for a peak that arrives one day a month. Each one is defensible in isolation; together they routinely run 30 percent or more above what the workload needs.

This page collects our research on instance selection, rightsizing, Graviton migration, and serverless economics, with real pricing throughout.
